Adam Schaaf Piano Here is a link to another Adam Schaaf player, one that still has the player hardware installed and working. Thanks to for pointing this video out to us! Google doesn't turn up much information about the Adam Schaaf Piano Company in any one particular location.
I took the liberty of sifting through the internets as we recently got a 1916 Adam Schaaf piano and know nearly nothing about it or the company that created it. The Adam Schaff Company, according to a piano restorer online and blue book, was established in 1873 and were known for building higher grade, good quality pianos. They created grand, upright, player pianos, and reproducing pianos. According to the piano restoring company, by the turn of the century, the company was controlled by Harry and Fred Schaaf. However, Whos' Who of Chicago from 1905 said that the company was actually established in 1871.
After Adam Schaaf died in 1902, the business was incorporated as the Adam Schaff Co. And according to the book, Henry Schaaf became president. At one point in time (33 years or so from their opening), their salesrooms and offices were located on 147-149 West Madison Street with their factories being located at West Monroe, Throop St, and Central Ave. This changed to where according to the Piano Blue Book, they had a beautiful six story building at 319-321 South Wabash Avenue and had a factory at 1020 Central Park Avenue. And then according to the piano restorers, in the early 1900s, their offices were 700-702 West Madison Street and a new factory was built at Fillmore Street. Apparently they also produced other brand names such as Claritone and Orpheus, supposedly to provide more affordable options. Sadly the huge success of this company did not take them through the Great Depression and the firm was closed sometime in the early 1930s.
As a result of their success however, they won a few awards at the World's Columbian Exposition: 1) For excellent tone quality, 2) sustaining power, 3) well planned scale, 4) excellent action, with easy, responsive touch, and 5) superior material and workmanship.
